OUR STORY
The Richmond Outdoors Coalition (ROC) is a group of cross-sector partners that collectively expand equitable access to the outdoors in Richmond, California.
Richmond is rich in outdoor land and waters. With 32 miles of shoreline, Richmond has more shoreline access than any other city on San Francisco and San Pablo Bays. Richmond also stands out as having more Bay Trail built than any other city.
However, access and connections are limited for many people. There are wealthier areas that are very close to open space, in the hills and along the shoreline, so many discrepancies exist within Richmond itself. Additionally, Chevron refinery represents almost 3,000 acres in Richmond; while it’s the city’s largest employer, there are large health risks to the air of Richmond.
Within that context, the Richmond Outdoor Coalition was initially convened by a small group of cross-sector partners in Richmond during May 2017. Our founding partners include the City of Richmond, West Contra Costa Unified School District, park agencies, and non-profit organizations. The Richmond Outdoor Coalition is supported by its backbone organization, the California Outdoor Engagement Coalition. For more details on our partners, please see below.
